On behalf of our President/Chairman of council, Prof. Charles Ogbulogo, FLPi, and other Council Member of our great Institute. I welcome us all to this grand occasion.
It was Alvin Toffler who said: The illiterate of 21st century won’t be those who can’t read and write, but those who can’t learn, unlearn and relearn. Toffler was right because “the world is changing. If we play by the old rules, we’ll lose he new battles.” – Selwyn Hughes.
In his 1906 play, The Doctor’s Dilemma, George Bernard Shaw was credited with this quotation: “All professions are conspiracies against the laity.” The above quotation is a combination of two separate clauses in two separate sentences to the effect that no doctor accuses another of malpractice because he is not sure of his own opinion as to ruin another by it. No doubt the same may be said of all professions. They are all conspiracies against the laity. These conspiracies make up the huge conflict we call society.
The place of leadership is to navigate this huge conflict to “get to yes” without being taken in. That is why we are here today. The conspiracies against laity refer to the methods used by professions to acquire prestige, power and wealth. We have not come for any of the above. They flow naturally from value-laden leadership. Yes, leadership is not value-free, rather it is value-laden because it engages our values. Ask anyone whether he or she wants to be a leader or a manager, the usual response is a leader. A call for leadership in our organisations and politics is usually a call for something of great prize. The term involves our self-images and moral codes.
A call to leadership is a call against conspiracy. It is a call on all of us to act in such manners to mobilize people to do something socially useful. As you are inducted today, that’s the call on you- “to mobilize people to do something socially useful”.
